Golf in South Africa at a glance

South Africa golf holidays are the big one: championship courses like Fancourt, Leopard Creek and the Gary Player Country Club, warm sunshine while it's winter at home, and the chance to add a safari, the Cape Winelands and Table Mountain to the same trip. It's a long flight, but South Africa is only 1 to 2 hours ahead of the UK, so you land ready to play.

We put the whole trip together: hotels, safari lodges, tee times and transfers, with small deposits and each golfer paying their own share.

South Africa's best golf courses for groups

South Africa's top courses regularly appear in world rankings, and many have hosted major tournaments. These are the ones our groups ask for most.

  • Fancourt Links (Garden Route) – A Gary Player design often ranked the best course in South Africa, with a true links feel.
  • Leopard Creek (Kruger) – On the edge of Kruger National Park, with wildlife on the far bank of the Crocodile River.
  • Gary Player Country Club (Sun City) – Home of the Nedbank Golf Challenge, known as Africa's major.
  • Pinnacle Point (Garden Route) – Clifftop holes above the Indian Ocean, including the famous par-3 13th.
  • Arabella (near Cape Town) – A Peter Matkovich design beside the Bot River Lagoon.
  • Pearl Valley (Winelands) – A Jack Nicklaus signature course in the Franschhoek Valley.
  • Steenberg (Cape Town) – Strategic golf through the vineyards of Constantia.

Where to stay on a South Africa golf holiday

Most trips combine a city or golf hotel with a few nights at a safari lodge:

Planning a group golf trip to South Africa

We've organised group golf trips for over 24 years. Here's how a South Africa trip works with us:

  • Small deposits secure your tee times, rooms and safari lodges early, which matters for the top courses and lodges.
  • Individual payments mean each golfer pays their own balance. No chasing your mates for money.
  • One booking covers your hotels, lodges, golf, tours and transfers between regions.
  • International flights are booked separately. We'll tell you which airports to fly into and out of.
  • Golf societies are welcome. See our GroupiaGolf Society page.

When is the best time to play golf in South Africa?

South Africa's seasons are the opposite of ours, so it's the perfect winter-sun golf trip. Choose your dates by the regions you want to visit.

Getting to South Africa

  • Cape Town and the Winelands: fly direct to Cape Town, around 11.5 hours overnight from London.
  • Garden Route: fly to George via Cape Town or Johannesburg, or drive from Cape Town in around 5 hours.
  • Kruger: fly to Johannesburg, then on to Kruger Mpumalanga airport.
  • Sun City: fly to Johannesburg; Sun City is around 2 hours by road.
  • Before you travel: check passport and entry requirements on the FCDO travel advice page, and your airline's golf bag allowance.

Beyond the golf

Take the cable car up Table Mountain, tour the Cape Peninsula and visit the wine estates of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. On the Garden Route, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay are great for a rest day, and in Kruger and the Pilanesberg the game drives are a highlight of any trip.

South Africa golf holiday FAQs

Yes. South Africa has some of the best courses in the world, including Fancourt, Leopard Creek and the Gary Player Country Club at Sun City, plus great value, summer sun during the UK winter and almost no jet lag. Add a safari and the Cape Winelands, and it's a trip of a lifetime.

Pinnacle Point on its clifftops above the Indian Ocean, Arabella beside the Bot River Lagoon, Pearl Valley among the Franschhoek mountains and Leopard Creek on the edge of Kruger National Park are hard to beat. Fancourt's Links course is often ranked the best in the country.

Our South Africa golf holidays start from £2,399pp for 8 nights at Fancourt with 3 rounds and a 3-night safari at Gondwana. Multi-centre trips combining Cape Town, the Winelands, the Garden Route and Kruger cost from around £6,000pp to £7,200pp. International flights are booked separately.

Green fees vary a lot: local courses can be very good value, while the top championship courses charge more, especially in peak season. Our packages include the rounds, so you know the cost before you go.

Yes, it's what most of our groups do. Play Leopard Creek and stay at a lodge in Kruger, add a safari at Gondwana to a Fancourt trip, or play Sun City next to the Pilanesberg game reserve.

September to April is best for Cape Town and the Garden Route, with October, November, March and April the sweet spot. For a safari, the dry months from May to September are best for game viewing. Most groups go in the UK autumn or spring to get both.

Around 11 to 12 hours overnight from London to Cape Town or Johannesburg. South Africa is only 1 to 2 hours ahead of the UK, so there's no real jet lag.

Sun City is home to the Gary Player Country Club, which hosts the Nedbank Golf Challenge, and the Lost City course, known for the crocodile pit beside its 13th green. It's around 2 hours from Johannesburg, next to the Pilanesberg game reserve.

International flights are booked separately. Our multi-centre packages include transfers, and some include internal flights between regions. We'll tell you exactly what's included for your trip.

Most top courses ask for proof of handicap, and some set a maximum. Bring your certificate or have your handicap app ready. We'll tell you the rules for each course when we build your trip.
